The 2017 Jazz Legends Gala is SOLD OUT.
The Jazz Legends Gala, now in its 11th year in 2017, features the presentation of the distinguished Monterey Jazz Festival Jazz Legends Award to a leading contributor to the world of jazz on the eve of the Monterey Jazz Festival each September.
In 2017, the Jazz Legends Gala will be held at The Inn at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach to honor one of the most influential pianists and composers in jazz, Herbie Hancock. The evening will include performances from the Gerald Clayton Trio and Regina Carter. The evening's program will be hosted by saxophonist, NEA Jazz Master and Jazz Legend Wayne Shorter.
390 patrons attended the sold-out 2016 Gala to benefit Monterey Jazz Festival’s jazz education programs which include: Monterey Jazz in the Schools, Next Generation Jazz Festival, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, Summer Jazz Camp, Monterey County Honor Ensembles, and the MJF Instrument Bank and Sheet Music Library. Monterey Jazz Festival is proud of its commitment to invest over $750,000 annually in its education programs, ensuring all young people have access to high quality jazz music education opportunities, and enriching lives through jazz.
Previous recipients of the award include Terence Blanchard, and NEA Jazz Masters Dave Brubeck, Gerald Wilson, George Wein, Jack DeJohnette, Wayne Shorter, Charles Lloyd, Chick Corea, and Quincy Jones.
Attendees at previous Galas have included Clint Eastwood, Don Was, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, and Herbie Hancock.
Previous live music performers have included Cyrille Aimée, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dianne Reeves, Gregory Porter, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Hiromi, Kim Nalley, Jamie Davis, and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra.
